Big Canoe has launched its maiden voyage with an ambitious project to
create an urban farm and community education site on a 1/2 acre lot on
Sanford Avenue in heart of Central Columbia.
Click here to view the site plan.
The site is being used for:
- Market Garden Space
- Sustainable Home Food Production Demonstration Space
- Compost Demonstration Sites
- Native Plant Demonstration Sites
- Converting the Home into a Certified Food Processing Center
- Creating a Learning Space for future gardeners and young people
During the 2007 warm-weather growing season we will
be having open work days and evenings. Click here
for more information.
In addition, Big Canoe participants have undertaken a comprehensive visioning
and planning process to build the long-term foundation for the organization.
Areas of focus for the organization will include:
- Creating a network of public garden-parks that include areas for food
production, wildlife habitat, native plant conservation and outdoor
experiential education.
- Designing educational programming that facilitates at-home gardening
and conservation plantings in place of lawns.
- Nurturing the growth of existing and emerging locally-owned enterprises
that focus on sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, appropriate
technology, affordable housing and a vibrant local culture.
- Providing real-life, hands-in-the-dirt experiences for the next generation
to spark long-term interest and excitement in regional conservation
efforts.
- Supporting policies that support long-term environmental and economic
sustainability for the region.
